Some treated unnecessarily

Health minister of Quebec, Yves Bolduc, is sorry for wait and announced that about 2730 Quebecois found to have breast cancer will be retested to reassure women.

After faulty cancer testing scandals in NF and QC the Canadian Association of Pathologists has unveiled new national guidelines in joint partnership with the College of American Pathologists. This will ensure a uniform cancer check list for reporting, communicating and interpreting test result.

On the other hand, one-third of women diagnosed with breast cancer in public screening programs are treated needlessly because their tumors will not be life-threatening, the British Medical Journal reported July 9, 2009. Some women are overdiagnosed and doctors tend to treat all women who have a tumor so the patient is supposed to weigh the risks and benefits from the breast cancer tests and treatment. It is a personal choice, difficult and frightening, since one cannot lean both ways at the same time.
